More Tests

Denise, our nanny, showed up on Monday and took one look at Derek and said, “wow he’s grown a ton this weekend”. I agree, each day I come home from work and he looks bigger than when we left. By looking at him, you would never know that he was a premie and should only be 7 or 8 weeks old.

Today I took him in for yet another synagis shot. He weighed in at 12 lbs 14.5 ounces. Just shy of my guess of 13 pounds. Even the nurse said Derek looked huge this month.

After his shot we went across the hall for some dreaded lab draws… Since my post last month, I found out that on both my side and Kevin’s side of the family there were numerous people who at some point had to get a B12 shot, which has to do with anemia and red blood cell issues. However, no one was really diagnosed with anything in particular. Because of that and some inconsistencies, Derek’s doctor wanted to do some extensive blood tests to try to figure out the inconsistencies she was seeing.

Due to the amount of tests ordered, 3 vials of blood were needed. The nurses at the lab worked for about a half hour to find a vein to use. After a number of pokes and a near Mommy Breakdown, they finally said they wouldn’t be able to do it and that I should go to the lab at the hospital. However, I was not about to have my child poked anymore today. So I had them take a small amount, just to get the hemoglobin count. I was hoping that the hemoglobin would be up and the other tests wouldn’t be needed.

The doctor called us this afternoon and said that his hemoglobin levels are better, but their are still some inconsistencies with the hematocrit (I obviously need to do some more research!). So I do need to take him to the hospital sometime this week for those additional tests. Keep your fingers crossed that we get the best nurse and that they have no problems finding his vein.

I’ll keep you posted.

Oh I feel for you! Both Kayden and Kyle have hypothroydism, which they have to get their blood drawn every 3 months! It is awful when they are babies! Kyle had his blood drawn 5 times before he was 2 weeks, and 10 time by the time he was 6 month! I can understand a mommy breakdown. Hope all is OK and I’ll pray for him! I love getting on-line and checking in on you. If I could find more time in my day I would start a blog, but just hasn’t happened yet! Take care!
