Derek means “ruler of the people” or “power of the tribe”. If only we had known that he would rule our family so soon.

We’ve had numerous people ask how we came up with his name. There’s no great story to how we came up with it. It’s not a family name nor did it have any special meaning (before now). Kevin and I had a couple of names picked out. One being Alexander, however, we couldn’t give the kid a longer first name than last name…he wouldn’t have liked that. The other possibility was Dylan, but that seems to be a pretty popular name right now.

So we decided on Derek. I saw the name on a little cubby at Sophia’s daycare a few months back and thought it was really cute. The name just kind of stuck with us. After two weeks, the name really fits his little personality.

His middle name, James, was all Kevin’s idea. Kevin wants to be able to call him DJ some day. We’ll see.
