Doing Great!

Sorry I didn’t update you over the weekend, it’s been a little busy. I was discharged on Saturday, which was a really busy day. I was so happy to be home to see Sophia. I think she was pretty happy to see me too.

We left the hospital around 2ish, then got a few hours of playtime with Sophia. I missed her sooo much!! After supper we tucked her in bed, then headed back to the hospital for a couple of hours.

Derek is doing great. He weighs 5 lbs 6 oz and isn’t using any of the machines. He only had oxygen and a few other things for a couple of hours. His bilirubin levels have been high. so he had the lights on him for a couple of days. The nurses made his eye patches into a pair of Oakley’s. It was really cute.

Every 12 hours they increase his food intake, which they feed through a tube in his nose. He started with 5 ML every 3 hours, now he’s up to 22 ML every three hours and seems to be digesting it great. At his 9 am feeding this morning he acted like he wanted to breastfeed. They had previously told me that they would not attempt to have him nurse until at least Wednesday… and then not to expect too much . Anyway, so I told the nurse and she said we could probably try. So at his 12 pm feeding we tried it. He ended up getting 8 ML, which is really great and very impressive.

Mom (Grandma Marilyn) has been hanging out with us all day. Derek has kept us very entertained with a little bit of gas and a little bit of pooping on the nurse. That was the only diaper I hadn’t changed in awhile. Glad I escaped that one!!

We’re trying to figure out the best schedule for everyone. Today, we are going to leave after his 3 pm feeding, then go pick up Sophia. We’ll hang out with her tonight. Then after supper, Kevin and I will probably come back for his 9 pm feeding.

Wow! He already nursed! That is fantastic! Oh, he’ll be ready to go home before you know it.

Has Sophia got to see him yet, or is she even allowed in the NICU this close to flu season?

Have you gotten any sleep, Lynnette? How’s Sophia’s sleeping going?

Good luck over the next few weeks, they will just fly by and life will be back to “normal”; a new kind of normal that is, before you know it.

You are all doing so great. Congratulations again! I can’t wait to see little Derek!
