I think the hard part, was not to get upset myself and to keep a rational head and commit to punishment. The whole process went pretty well I think. Based on her reaction, I believe she at least understood (as best a seventeen month old could) it was a bad place to be. She probably doesn't quite understand the reason she was placed there, was because of her choice to hit Lexi.
