Up until last week we had a very difficult time getting Sophia to sleep. For the first months of her life she would take a late afternoon nap, then go to bed around 9ish. It seemed to work pretty well, because she had no problem sleeping through the night.
About a month ago it seemed we were fighting with her every night to get her down. Turns out the 7 pm nap and the rocking and feeding her to sleep just wasn’t working out. Everyone offered their two cents worth when I told them our ritual. For what it’s worth, it did work for us for quite a long time.
So after a lot of reading last week, we finally decided to change it up a little. The new rule is no napping after 6 pm. We have a pretty tight night-time routine which ends with me feeding her and putting her to bed (awake). The first night she screamed at the top of her sweet little lungs…it was sooo hard!! After that it’s been pretty simple, it seems to take about 10 minutes. And to top it off, she has been sleeping through the night again. I’m so happy she figured that out so quickly, I’m not sure I could have handled another whole hour of screaming without swooping her up and trying to make it all better.
Good for you! I wish we would have done away with the feeding to sleep that early.. Maybe then we wouldn’t have had to wait for 3 years for Emily to sleep through the night. I know some people who have 2 kids up in the night and sleeping with them–Whatever you do DON’T START THAT!!
Oh, this is so tough; bedtime I mean.
Just beware that it goes through phases. I swear that the twins would sleep differently depending on their growth spurts. The more they were growing the more the better they would sleep, then they’d go through a phase of wanting to play all night. It makes me sleepy thinking about it.
