Has anyone ever flown with an 8 month old?? If you have any suggestions on what to take or how to take it, please let us know. We have a million questions!! My main concern is if I will have enough milk to satisfy Sophia for the week (since I’m still breastfeeding). And where do you change a diaper on the plane? Should we take the big stroller and infant car seat or a rear facing big-girl seat with an umbrella stroller. What should we take with and what should we just buy when we get there?? Help!!
You should e-mail Jenny Willey (Joan’s daughter). She and Scott have flown with one and two kids. They are becoming experts at it. I’ll send you their e-mail address.
Okay, I flew with Dianna when she was under a year. How long is the flight? Are you buying her her own seat, or taking her on your lap? Where are you guys going? What time is the flight?
I brought a bottle with me and made sure she was eating on the take off and the landing (when she was awake). I read somewhere that those are the hardest times on little ears and the sucking is akin to us chewing gum. If she takes a pacifier, you may just want to give her one of those too.
If she has her own seat, she will need a car seat on the plane. I’d recommend taking the one she likes the most. Whatever she seems to handle the best, take THAT one.
If you and Kevin are both going, then it won’t be such a big deal, but remember that you are going to have to lug a baby, a car seat, a diaper bag, and a stroller onto the plane, not to mention your OWN carry on bags. A backpack can be handy for keeping your hands free, and grabbing one of those luggage carts (especially if you take the big car seat) REALLY helps out. Try to consolidate as much as possible (like putting your purse INSIDE the diaper bag).
Don’t pack a week’s worth of diapers. You can find these anywhere, and it’s just silly to take up all that room, unless you know you can’t get any anywhere else. If you have a small “backup” can of formula to take (or buy once you are there) then do that as well. She’s probably never had it, but I’m pretty sure they have a long shelf life if not opened, and it can be for emergencies only.
As for changing her on the plane you’ll probably want to figure out a way to do it in the bathroom. It will definitely be a one person job and you may need to do it on your lap (with a changing pad) while sitting on the toilet. If it’s just wet, it’s not a big deal; you can whip that thing off while she’s standing up, wipe, and re-diaper pretty easy. BM’s will be more tricky (of course). If you can, get in a last change before you fly, and if the flight isn’t too long, she should be able to make it the whole time.
Keep LOTS OF WIPES. These are not only for her butt, but for EVERYTHING. They come in handy for sure.
Keep your sense of humor and come with ideas to keep her entertained, and also be prepared to be “that couple” with the screaming baby. A lot of people will understand, a lot won’t. Just stay calm (I swear, they can FEEL when you are anxious) and try to make light of the situation. She’ll probably be perfect and sleep the whole time, but you never know.
Oh! And don’t forget to check out all the new security measures. I just flew a couple weekends ago and the liquid thing can be a PAIN. I believe that breast milk is allowed now, but don’t cause yourself more torment going through security by packing a lot of fluid type things in your carry one. This includes lipstick, chapstick, diaper rash ointment and stuff. Check the airport’s website. This will hold you up at security and waste SO MUCH time.
Anyway, I hope I helped. You can get some other info here:
