First Ear Infection

We got a phone call on Thursday morning from Baby School saying that Sophia was really cranky and tugging on her ear. I, not having ever dealt with this before, said “so what do I need to do?” I got her into the doctor that afternoon, and sure enough- it was an ear infection.

She’s been such a trooper. Most of the day she plays so hard that she forgets about here ear. Only when she gets tired does she realize that it hurts and then she gets fussy.

Can anyone tell me how long it takes to get them through the painful part once they get on the antibiotic?

You know, that’s a great question. I think that around 5 to 7 days into the medicine that they basically feel better. Think about when you take antibiotics, it’s pretty quick, and that’s why they always say “Make sure you take it all, even if you feel better.”

My advice to anyone with a young child. MAKE SURE you are diligent with the antibiotics. I, unfortunately, missed doses and things when Dianna was little, and I still, to this day, think that contributed to her having to get tubes in her ears. I feel like I didn’t do things right, during those VERY FIRST ear infections and then her body became immune to the medicine. With the twins, things have been much better.

Interestingly, they seem to be very close to a vaccine for ear infections. Check this out:

Thanks for all the great info Steph!! I appreciate the reply!! We’ve been really good and haven’t missed a dose yet!! It seems she is feeling quite a bit better already, but still tugging a little at her ear when she gets really tired.
