I thought since I hadn’t heard anything about my glucose results from Tuesday, that meant that everything was good. Turned out it’s a pass/fail test that I just happened to fail!! My doctor has a cut-off of 140 mg, and mine was 151.
This means I have to go have a 3 hour (which actually takes 4 hours) glucose tolerance test next Friday. I have to over-load with carbs for three days, then fast for 12 hours before the test. Luckily the test is at 8 AM. They take a fasting blood sugar level, then make you drink that cola stuff…which if you remember, I didn’t think it was too bad. Then they take blood every hour for three hours. Sounds fun, huh?
Anyway, I was really worried at first, but I’ve done a ton of reading on www.babycenter.com (they have a ton of great information!!) I basically learned that almost 33% of people fail their first test, 25% of those people fail the second test. The test itself doesn’t sound too bad, but people tend to get really sick due to fasting for that long and the high intake of sugar that their body had to deal with. I did get really sleepy after the first test and know I’m going to get hungry. Usually by 12 AM, I’ve had breakfast and at least on snack.
Hopefully it’ll be no problem and I’ll pass with flying colors. I’m not used to failing tests!!
I failed the first time too. I was all in hysterics about the whole thing, but I passed the 3 hour test. I did get light headed during the last hour and had to go lay down-I had a hard time going that long without food too.
